TROOP E NEWS RELEASE

March 2, 2014
Alcohol Suspected in Young Child’s Death

Rapides Parish – Last night, a crash involving a UTV killed a young child from Lufkin, TX and injured several others. Seatbelts were used, but alcohol is a suspected factor.

Troopers responded to the crash around 9:10 p.m., which occurred on Sugartown Road at Booster Wright Road. The crash involved a 2013 Polaris Razr, driven by William P. Antee (W/M 43 yrs) of Boyce, LA. The Polaris was stopped, when Antee accelerated the vehicle in a manner that caused the rear tires to lose traction, resulting in Antee losing control of the vehicle. After losing control of the vehicle, it overturned.

Antee received minor injuries, but refused medical attention. There were three juveniles in his vehicle, identified as a white female (11 yrs) of Boyce, a white female (8 yrs) of Boyce, and Mia D. Castillo (W/F 4 yrs). The eight year old received moderate injuries and was transported to Cabrini. The eleven year old received minor injuries. Castillo was pronounced dead.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Antee was charged with vehicular homicide, vehicular negligent injuring, and careless operation. He was booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center.

Motorists must be reminded that alcohol has many effects on the body. Alcohol can impair visual ability, alter sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Just one drink may cause these effects.

The public is reminded that it is dangerous and illegal to operate off-road vehicles (i.e. three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and other all-terrain vehicles) on any public roadway in this state.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 10 fatal crashes in 2014, resulting in 12 fatalities.
