TROOP E NEWS RELEASE August 23, 2016 Motorcyclist Killed in Crash, Speed Considered a Factor Rapides Parish – Late this afternoon, a single vehicle crash killed a man from Clifton, LA. He was wearing a helmet, but was ejected from the motorcycle. Troopers responded to the crash around 5:00 p.m., which occurred on Clifton Road. The crash involved a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle, driven by Kelby D. Magallon (O/M 23 yrs). The Suzuki was southbound on Clifton Road, traveling at a high rate of speed, when Magallon lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the motorcycle collided with a tree. Magallon was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Motorcyclists must wear a proper US D.O.T. helmet when operating their motorcycle on Louisiana roadways. Although not all crashes are survivable, properly utilizing safety equipment like approved motorcycle helmets and seat belts decrease your risk of serious injury or death. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a situation. Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading causes of highway crashes and fatalities. Troop E Troopers have investigated 34 fatal crashes in 2016, resulting in 39 fatalities.
