TROOP E NEWS RELEASE October 10, 2016 Unrestrained Many Man Killed in Crash Sabine Parish – Early yesterday morning, a single vehicle crash killed a man from Many, LA and injured the female driver. Both occupants were not wearing a seat belt. Troopers responded to the crash around 12:20 a.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 6 west of LA Hwy 476. The crash involved a 2003 Pontiac Montana, driven by Rebecca W. Stephenson (W/F 74 yrs) of Many. The Pontiac was eastbound on LA Hwy 6 when Stephenson lost control and exited the right side of the roadway before colliding with a driveway embankment. After colliding with the driveway embankment, the vehicle rolled over. The driver and passenger, identified as Vernon L. Stephenson (W/M 73 yrs), spoke with Troopers on the scene. Both gave a detailed account, of the events that transpired, before being transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport for treatment. The driver received moderate injuries, but the passenger was pronounced dead later Sunday afternoon. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes. Troop E Troopers have investigated 42 fatal crashes in 2016, resulting in 47 fatalities.
