TROOP E NEWS RELEASE May 1, 2016 Alexandria Teen Killed in Rapides Parish High Speed Crash Rapides Parish – Early this morning, a single vehicle crash killed a teenager from Alexandria, LA. High speed is considered a primary factor in the crash. Troopers responded to the crash around 12:15 a.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 112 at Fish Hatchery Road. The crash involved a 2004 Mercury, driven by Guillermo Maldonado-Ramos (O/M 18 yrs). The Mercury was eastbound on LA Hwy 112, traveling at a high rate of speed, when Ramos lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with a culvert and a utility pole before overturning. Ramos was wearing his seat belt, but was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a situation. Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading causes of highway crashes and fatalities. While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury. Troop E Troopers have investigated fifteen fatal crashes in 2016, resulting in seventeen fatalities.
