TROOP E NEWS RELEASE

March 21, 2017
High Speed and No Helmet Contribute to Motorcyclist’s Death

Sabine Parish – Earlier today, Troopers responded to a single vehicle crash that killed a man from Zwolle, LA. Excessive speed and lack of helmet usage are considered factors in the crash.

Troopers responded to the crash around 12:00 p.m., which occurred on Branson Lane near LA Hwy 175. The crash involved a 1990 Harley Davidson, driven by Joey D. Skinner (W/M 58 yrs). The Harley was northbound on Branson Lane, at a high rate of speed, when Skinner lost control after applying his brakes. This action resulted in the Harley overturning, ejecting Skinner. The Harley then collided with Skinner.

Skinner was pronounced dead on the scene.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a situation. Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading causes of highway crashes and fatalities.

Motorcyclists must wear a proper US D.O.T. helmet when operating their motorcycle on Louisiana roadways. Although not all crashes are survivable, properly utilizing safety equipment like approved motorcycle helmets and seat belts decrease your risk of serious injury or death.

Troop E Troopers have investigated ten fatal crashes in 2017, resulting in thirteen fatalities.
