TROOP E NEWS RELEASE April 9, 2017 Unrestrained Montgomery Man Killed in Early Morning Crash, High Speed Considered a Factor Winn Parish – Early this morning, a single vehicle crash killed a man from Montgomery, LA that was not wearing a seat belt. Troopers responded to the crash around 6:00 a.m., which occurred on US Hwy 71, near the Winn/Grant Parish line. The crash involved a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by Dewayne J. Lambert (W/M 26 yrs). The Volkswagen was northbound on US Hwy 71, at a high rate of speed, when Lambert lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with an embankment and then a tree. Lambert was pronounced dead at the scene. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a situation. Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading causes of highway crashes and fatalities. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes. Troop E Troopers have investigated 17 fatal crashes in 2017, resulting in 22 fatalities.
