TROOP E NEWS RELEASE
May 13, 2017
Unrestrained Colfax Man Killed in Crash

Grant Parish Late this morning, a single vehicle crash killed a man from Colfax, LA who was not wearing a seat belt.

Troopers responded to the crash around 11:45 a.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 492 near Nellie Ryan Road. The crash involved a 2013 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Oliver Washington III (B/M 34 yrs). The Chevrolet was westbound on LA Hwy 492 when Washington III lost control and exited the right side of the roadway, before exiting the left side. Then, the vehicle collided with a bridge rail and became airborne, before it became submerged in Bayou Darrow.

Washington III was pronounced dead.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 18 fatal crashes in 2017, resulting in 23 fatalities.
