TROOP E NEWS RELEASE

September 23, 2015
**UPDATE**Motorcyclist Killed in Vernon Parish Crash While Not Wearing a Helmet

**The driver is identified as Jesse L. Schlomer.

Vernon Parish – Late last night, a single vehicle crash involving a motorcycle killed a man from DeRidder, LA that was not wearing a helmet.

Troopers responded to the crash around 10:00 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 1146 at I.E. Stracener Road. The crash involved a 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle, driven by a 41 year old white male. The Harley was westbound on LA Hwy 1146 when the male driver lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the motorcycle collided with a road construction sign and the driver was ejected.

The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead. The exact identity of the driver is being withheld until notification to the next of kin is made.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Motorcyclists must wear a proper US D.O.T. helmet when operating their motorcycle on Louisiana roadways. Although not all crashes are survivable, properly utilizing safety equipment like approved motorcycle helmets and seat belts decrease your risk of serious injury or death.

Motorcycle awareness license plates are available through the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Please visit their website at www.expresslane.org for more information. Funds generated from the purchase of the plates will be used by the Motorcycle Awareness Campaign to increase awareness and promote/support training and education efforts for motorcyclists.

Although the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, Troopers would like to remind the public of the following: inattentive and distracted driving is dangerous and is a leading cause of crashes in our state. It is important for motorists to pay attention to what is going on outside of the vehicle they are driving. More information on distracted driving may be found online at the federal government’s official distracted driving website, www.distraction.gov.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 30 fatal crashes in 2015, resulting in 35 fatalities.
