TROOP E NEWS RELEASE September 23, 2015 Pitkin Man Killed in Vernon Parish Crash Vernon Parish – Late this afternoon, a crash involving two vehicles killed a man from Pitkin, LA. Troopers responded to the crash around 5:10 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 10 at Donald Perkins Road. The crash involved a 2014 Ford Escape, driven by Bobby G. Bunting Sr. (W/M 79 yrs) and a 2000 Peterbilt (18 wheeler), driven by Benny O. Poston (W/M 48 yrs) of Anacoco, LA. Prior to the crash, the Ford was stopped on Donald Perkins Road. Bunting Sr. entered LA Hwy 10, attempting to travel onto LA Hwy 377, when the westbound Peterbilt (westbound on LA Hwy 10) collided with it. The Ford failed to yield to the Peterbilt which resulted in the collision. Bunting Sr. was wearing his seat belt, but was pronounced dead. Poston received minor injuries and was transported to Oakdale Hospital. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury. Although the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, Troopers would like to remind the public of the following: inattentive and distracted driving is dangerous and is a leading cause of crashes in our state. It is important for motorists to pay attention to what is going on outside of the vehicle they are driving. More information on distracted driving may be found online at the federal government’s official distracted driving website, www.distraction.gov. Troop E Troopers have investigated 31 fatal crashes in 2015, resulting in 36 fatalities.
