TROOP E NEWS RELEASE

October 4, 2015
Unrestrained Winnfield Teen Killed in Crash

Winn Parish – Late last night, a single vehicle crash killed a teenager from Winnfield, LA that was not wearing his seat belt. Two unrestrained passengers, in his vehicle, also were injured.

Troopers responded to the crash around 10:15 p.m., which occurred on Gum Springs Road near US Hwy 84. The crash involved a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt, driven by Felipe De Jesus Guerrero Jr. (O/M 19 yrs). The Chevrolet was southbound on Gum Springs Road when De Jesus Guerrero Jr. lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After reentering Gum Springs Road, the vehicle exited the left side and collided with two trees.

De Jesus Guerrero Jr. was pronounced dead on the scene. His only two passengers, identified as Brandon D. Lawson (W/M 18 yrs) of Winnfield and Matthew L. Sepulvado (W/M 22 yrs) of Winnfield were transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center. Lawson received minor injuries and Sepulvado received moderate injuries.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 34 fatal crashes in 2015, resulting in 41 fatalities.
