TROOP E NEWS RELEASE October 7, 2015 Unrestrained Deville Man Killed in Crash Rapides Parish – Last night, a crash involving two vehicles killed a man from Deville, LA. He was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from his vehicle. Troopers responded to the crash around 8:50 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 115 at LA Hwy 1206. The crash involved a 2015 Dodge Challenger, driven by a juvenile (W/M 16 yrs) of Deville and a 1996 Nissan pickup, driven by Tony D. Verheyden (W/M 32 yrs). The Dodge was westbound on LA Hwy 1206 when the juvenile failed to stop at the stop sign. This action resulted in the Nissan, which was southbound on LA Hwy 115, colliding with the Dodge. After this initial collision, the Dodge exited the roadway and collided with a house. The juvenile driver was wearing his seat belt and received moderate injuries. He was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center. His only passenger, identified as a juvenile (W/F 16 yrs) of Deville, was not wearing her seat belt and received moderate injuries. She was transported to Cabrini Hospital for treatment. Verheyden was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests and charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes. Troop E Troopers have investigated 35 fatal crashes in 2015, resulting in 42 fatalities.
