TROOP E NEWS RELEASE June 24, 2015 Unrestrained Pineville Man Killed in Crash LaSalle Parish – Earlier today, a single vehicle crash killed a man from Pineville, LA. He was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected during the crash. Troopers responded to the crash around 5:55 a.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 500 at Lottie Lane. The crash involved a 1999 Chevrolet SUV, driven by Joseph H. Burgener (W/M 24 yrs). The Chevrolet was eastbound on LA Hwy 500 when Burgener lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, Burgener overcorrected his vehicle to the left and then to the right before it overturned several times. Burgener was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt and properly restraining your children in car seats will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes. Although the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, Troopers would like to remind the public of the following: inattentive and distracted driving is dangerous and is a leading cause of crashes in our state. It is important for motorists to pay attention to what is going on outside of the vehicle they are driving. Troop E Troopers have investigated 16 fatal crashes in 2015, resulting in 21 fatalities.
