TROOP E NEWS RELEASE February 7, 2016 Unrestrained Plaucheville Man Killed in Crash, Alcohol Usage is a Suspected Factor Avoyelles Parish – Earlier this evening, a single vehicle crash killed a man from Plaucheville, LA. He was not wearing his seat belt when the crash occurred. Troopers responded to the crash around 7:40 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 451 north of LA Hwy 1. The crash involved a 2011 GMC pickup, driven by Charles D. West (W/M 51 yrs). The GMC was southbound when West exited the roadway, onto the shoulder, in an attempt to perform a U-turn. West then accelerated rapidly which caused him to lose control of his vehicle. The GMC exited the left side of the roadway, traveled down an embankment, and collided with a tree. West was pronounced dead on the scene. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes. Motorists must be reminded that alcohol has many effects on the body. Alcohol can impair visual ability, alter sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Just one drink may cause these effects. Troop E Troopers have investigated four fatal crashes in 2016, resulting in six fatalities.
