TROOP E NEWS RELEASE February 21, 2016 Unrestrained Young Columbia Man Killed in Crash, High Speed Suspected Factor Grant Parish – Early this morning, a single vehicle crash killed a young man from Columbia, LA. He was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected during the crash. Excessive speed is a suspected factor. Troopers responded to the crash around 6:30 a.m., which occurred on US Hwy 165 north of LA Hwy 123. The crash involved a 2002 Ford Explorer, driven by Dewayne M. Calloway (W/M 24 yrs). The Ford was southbound on US Hwy 165 when Calloway lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with several trees. Calloway was pronounced dead at the scene. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a situation. Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading causes of highway crashes and fatalities. Troop E Troopers have investigated five fatal crashes in 2016, resulting in seven fatalities.
