TROOP E NEWS RELEASE

March 13, 2016
Unrestrained Young Woman Killed in Crash

Rapides Parish – Last night, a single vehicle crash killed a young woman from Elizabeth, LA and injured a young man from Glenmora, LA. Both occupants of the vehicle were not wearing their seat belt.

Troopers responded to the crash around 8:00 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 462 near Bethel Church. The crash involved a 1996 Ford pickup, driven by Memphis H. Johnson (W/M 25 yrs). The Ford was westbound on LA Hwy 462 when Johnson lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, Johnson overcorrected his vehicle and exited the left side before it overturned and collided with several trees.

Johnson received moderate injuries and was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center. His only passenger, identified as Valley L. Willis (W/F 22 yrs), was pronounced dead.

Routine toxicology tests and charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes.

Troop E Troopers have investigated eight fatal crashes in 2016, resulting in ten fatalities.
