TROOP E NEWS RELEASE January 17, 2016 **UPDATE**Double Fatality Crash in Vernon Parish ** Michael O. Perkins has been pronounced dead. This crash is now considered a triple fatality. See below for the original release from January 16, 2016. Vernon Parish – Earlier today, a single vehicle crash seriously injured a man and killed two women, all from Pitkin, LA. Troopers responded to the crash around 2:05 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 113 at CJ Doyle Road. The crash involved a 2011 Nissan Armada, driven by Michael O. Perkins (W/M 70 yrs). The Nissan was southbound on LA Hwy 113 when Perkins lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle entered a ditch before colliding with a tree. Perkins was wearing his seat belt, but received serious injuries. He was transported to Rapides Regional Medical Center. His only two passengers, identified as Janice N. Perkins (W/F 69 yrs) and Marie F. Powell (W/F 88 yrs), were wearing their seat belt. Janice Perkins was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center where she was pronounced dead. Powell was pronounced dead on the scene. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury. Troop E Troopers have investigated two fatal crashes in 2016, resulting in two fatalities.
