TROOP E NEWS RELEASE December 31, 2015 Young Lecompte Woman Killed in Crash Rapides Parish – Early this morning, a crash involving two vehicles killed a young woman from Lecompte, LA. Troopers responded to the crash around 6:30 a.m., which occurred on US Hwy 165 north of Forest Hill, LA. The crash involved a 2013 Volkswagen, driven by Kristi N. Mayfield (W/F 21 yrs) and a 1999 Peterbilt (18 wheeler), driven by Travis A. Highbaugh (W/M 58 yrs) of Leesville, LA. The Volkswagen was southbound on US Hwy 165 when it collided with the rear of the Peterbilt, which was also southbound on US Hwy 165. Mayfield was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center where she was later pronounced dead. She was wearing a seat belt. Highbaugh was wearing his seat belt and was not injured. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Although the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, Troopers would like to remind the public of the following: inattentive and distracted driving is dangerous and is a leading cause of crashes in our state. It is important for motorists to pay attention to what is going on outside of the vehicle they are driving. Troop E Troopers have investigated 45 fatal crashes in 2015, resulting in 52 fatalities.
