Troopers Make Arrest in Copper Theft from DOTD

On the morning of August 13, 2012, Louisiana State Police Troop D was advised of a burglary that occurred at the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) office located at 5327 Highway 90 in Lake Charles. A trooper was immediately sent to secure the scene and detectives from the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations responded.

Upon arrival, investigators learned that approximately 1000 feet of copper wiring with an approximate value of $5,000 had been stolen. Troopers, with assistance from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, searched the area for evidence.

While checking a nearby wooded area, troopers observed a subject who was fleeing. Shortly thereafter, troopers apprehended 42-year-old Bradley B. Edwards of Lake Charles.

After additional investigation, Edwards was arrested and charged with theft over $1,000, burglary, simple criminal damage to property, and flight from an officer. Edwards was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center. Bond was set at $150,000. If convicted, Edwards faces up to 23 years in prison and a $6,500 fine.

The investigation is continuing and additional arrests are possible. Anyone who has information related to this case is asked to contact Louisiana State Police detectives at 337-491-2903.
