DWI Checkpoint Results in Six Arrests

On Friday, September 7, 2012, from approximately 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. Louisiana
State Police Troop D and the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office conducted a DWI checkpoint in Calcasieu Parish. Our mission was to find and remove impaired drivers from the road before they could cause injury or death to themselves or others.

Troopers and deputies arrested 6 impaired drivers for DWI. In addition, nineteen (19) other citations were written which consisted of the following:

    6 driving under suspension
    1 insurance violation
    1 careless operation
    1 improper turn
    1 neon license plate
2 expired motor vehicle inspection decals
    2 no driver's license
    1 improper lane usage
    2 driving left of center
    1 seatbelt violation
    1 open alcoholic container
Last year, Troop D investigated 18 fatal crashes resulting in 20 fatalities. Of those 20 fatalities, 10 (50%) were killed by impaired drivers (alcohol and/or drugs). Alcohol and/or drug use may affect motor control by distorting one’s judgment of motion, form, and distance. It can also affect reflexes and reduce reaction time.

Plan ahead and designate a sober driver before traveling to a destination where alcohol will be consumed. Drive sober or get pulled over.

To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
