News Release – Troop D September 14, 2012 Louisiana State Police to Participate in “Celebrate My Drive” Teen Driver Safety Event Motor vehicle crashes are the number one killer of Louisiana citizens and Louisiana was rated second in the nation for having the deadliest roads as cited by Reader’s Digest in 2010. In 2011, 667 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes in Louisiana and over 70,000 people were injured. Unfortunately, driver impairment was responsible 43 percent of crash fatalities. Young drivers also contributed to these alarming numbers. Teens ages 15 to 20 were involved in more than 10,000 injury related motor vehicle crashes; of those crashes 94 drivers were killed. The Louisiana State Police is committed to educating our citizens and teens about the dangers on the roads. Impaired and distracted driving continue to be leading causes of fatal and serious injury crashes in our state. This is why the Louisiana State Police is participating in “Celebrate My Drive” on Saturday, September 15, 2012, hosted by State Farm Insurance. The event will take place in communities around the country and will encourage teens to develop safe driving habits and promote good decision making skills.
