Checkpoint in Calcasieu Parish Results in Five DWI Arrests

Last night, Louisiana State Police Troop D with assistance from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office and Lake Charles City Police conducted a DWI and seatbelt checkpoint in Calcasieu Parish. The checkpoint resulted in 5 DWI arrests including one juvenile.

Law enforcement officers issued 36 citations at the checkpoint for a variety of offenses including failure to wear a seatbelt and open alcoholic beverage container. In addition, 2 people were arrested for outstanding warrants.

Last year, Troop D investigated 18 fatal crashes resulting in 20 fatalities. Of those 20 fatalities, 10 (50%) were killed by impaired drivers (alcohol and/or drugs). Motorists are asked to designate a sober driver before heading to any location where alcohol may be consumed.

Troopers arrested over 1,200 impaired drivers in the Troop D area last year. Drive sober or get pulled over.

To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency.

Support for this DWI checkpoint was provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
