News Release – Troop D October 8, 2012 Troopers Arrest Child Endangering Drunk Drivers On October 6, 2012, at approximately 6:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D received a complaint from a concerned citizen about a reckless driver in Calcasieu Parish. Troopers stopped the reported vehicle at the intersection of Gauthier Road and Nelson Road and determined the driver, 50-year-old Marty Courville of Lake Charles, was impaired. At the time of the traffic stop Courville had two children, ages 9 and 10, in his vehicle. Courville was arrested for DWI with child endangerment, driving under suspension, and improper lane usage. Troopers later determined that Courville’s blood alcohol content was over 3 times the legal limit (.271g%). Courville was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center. Carolyn Ann Bushnell, age 59 of Lake Charles, drove to the scene of the traffic stop to retrieve the children. Troopers determined Bushnell was impaired and arrested her for DWI. A subsequent blood alcohol test showed her level of impairment was nearly 2 ½ times the legal limit (.197g%). The children were brought to Louisiana State Police Troop D. It was discovered that the father of one of the children was with Courville when he allowed his child to get in the vehicle with Courville. The father stated that he did not think Courville was "that drunk." The father was charged with contributing to the neglect of a child and released on a summons. The children were safely turned over to relatives. Troopers contacted the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services and provided them with information relating to the incident. In 2011, Troop D arrested over 1,200 people for impaired driving. Many of those impaired drivers were reported to State Police by concerned motorists. To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency. Drive sober or get pulled over.
