News Release – Troop D October 3, 2012 Fatal Pedestrian Crash on I-10 in Calcasieu Parish On October 3, 2012, at 8:29 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a crash involving a pedestrian and a large truck on Interstate Highway 10 in the eastbound lanes of travel about 2 1/2 miles east of Vinton that claimed the life of an Alabama man. Preliminary investigation revealed that shortly before 8:00 a.m., the Calcasieu Parish Combined Anti-Drug Task Force conducted a traffic stop on I-10 eastbound near Milepost 12. The driver of the vehicle, 27-year-old Matthew Quentin Tatum of Montgomery, Alabama, was arrested after approximately four pounds of marijuana was located inside the trunk of the vehicle he was driving. Quentin, who was handcuffed, fled on foot into the eastbound lanes of travel and was struck by a 2005 Volvo commercial motor vehicle driven by 58-year-old Charles H. Guidry of Lake Charles. Evidence at the scene indicates that Guidry attempted to avoid striking Tatum. Tatum was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office. No charges have been filed and the crash remains under investigation. Eastbound I-10 traffic near the scene was diverted onto U.S. Highway 90 for approximately 2 hours. Safety is a shared responsibility for all road users, including drivers and pedestrians. Pedestrians should be aware of their surroundings and the dangers associated with running into the lanes of travel of a busy highway.
