News Release – Troop D February 14, 2012 Calcasieu Parish seat belt checkpoint results Lake Charles – This morning, law enforcement officers with Louisiana State Police Troop D and the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office conducted a seat belt checkpoint on Louisiana Highway 384 (Country Club Road) east of Nelson Road in Lake Charles. A total of 2,083 vehicles were screened. During the checkpoint, troopers and deputies issued motorists a total of 65 citations including 17 for no seat belt, 5 for improper or no child restraint, 25 for an expired motor vehicle inspection, 1 for no motor vehicle inspection, 2 for an expired license plate, 8 for illegal window tint, 2 for no driver’s license in possession, 4 for driving under suspension, and 1 insurance violation. Additionally, troopers arrested a man for resisting an officer by providing false information as well as theft and contempt of court warrants. As a public service, the Louisiana State Police had certified child passenger safety technicians on hand to answer questions and provide guidance. Troopers conducted 4 child seat installations during the checkpoint. So far this year, Louisiana State Police Troop D has investigated 7 fatal crashes resulting in 9 deaths. One of these fatal crashes involved a motorcycle. Of the remaining crashes, 7 of the 8 people who died were not wearing a seat belt. Wearing a seat belt is the easiest and most effective thing motorists can do to lessen the likelihood of being seriously injured or killed in a crash. Seat belts save lives. Buckle up Louisiana.
