Train and 18-wheeler collide in Beauregard Parish

DeRidder LA – On Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at approximately 4:15 a.m., troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a crash on U.S. Highway 190 near Seth Cole Road about 2 ½ miles west of DeRidder that resulted in closure of the highway at that location for over 8 hours.

Investigating troopers report that an 18-wheeler driven by 61-year-old Hurchel A. Britton of Livingston, TX was traveling east on U.S. 190 and approached a railroad crossing with active warning lights. Britton reduced his speed but did not initially observe a northbound train approaching the railroad crossing at low speed. Britton proceeded across the track and was struck by the caboose of the train, causing the caboose to derail. No injuries were reported.

Britton was issued a citation for failure to obey a signal indicating the approach of a train.

In 2010, there were 106 highway grade crossing collisions in Louisiana. Louisiana had the 5th highest number of highway grade crossing collisions in the nation. Nearly half of all highway grade crossing collisions occur at crossings with active warning devices. Motorists should always be extra careful before proceeding at any railroad crossing with lights flashing indicating the approach of a train.
