On May 25, 2012, State Police Troop D conducted a DWI checkpoint on Louisiana Highway 26 in Jefferson Davis Parish resulting in five DWI arrests. In addition to the five DWI arrests, 3 citations were issued for an open alcoholic container, 2 citations were issued for no child restraint, 1 for driving under suspension, 2 for no driver’s license, 4 for an expired motor vehicle inspection decal, 2 for wrong address on driver’s license, 2 for no driver’s license, and 1 license plate was seized for no proof of insurance. Last year, Troop D investigated 18 fatal crashes resulting in 20 fatalities. Of those 20 fatalities, 10 (50%) were killed by impaired drivers (alcohol and/or drugs). Alcohol and/or drug use may affect motor control by distorting one’s judgment of motion, form, and distance. It can also affect reflexes and reduce reaction time. Plan ahead and designate a sober driver before traveling to a destination where alcohol will be consumed. To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency. The national Click it or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign will continue through Sunday, June 3, 2012. During the operation, troopers will place increased emphasis on seat belt and child restraint enforcement. Over 160 hours of overtime has been allocated to Troop D to provide additional troopers to locate and ticket motorists who choose not to wear a seat belt. Louisiana law requires vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in all seating positions, front seat and back seat, day and night. Louisiana law also prohibits children under the age of 12 from riding in the bed of a pickup truck. Click it or Ticket. During the 2011 Memorial Day weekend in Louisiana, there were ten fatalities from vehicle crashes and six of those persons were unrestrained. While not all crashes are survivable, occupants who are properly restrained are less likely to be seriously injured or killed. Additional troopers will be on duty this Memorial Day weekend in an effort to keep motorists safe. Funding for additional patrols and checkpoints is being provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. Contact Information Sgt.
