News Release – Troop D May 13, 2012 Calcasieu Parish DWI checkpoint results in five arrests Last night troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop D, with assistance from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, conducted a DWI checkpoint on U.S. Highway 90 east of Lake Charles in Calcasieu Parish resulting in five DWI arrests. In addition to the five DWI arrests, troopers issued 2 citations for an open alcoholic beverage container, 3 for an expired motor vehicle inspection decal, 2 for driving without a driver’s license, 1 for driving an unregistered vehicle, 4 for driving under suspension, 2 for no seat belt, 1 for improper vehicle equipment, and 1 for failure to obey a police officer. Last year, Troop D investigated 18 fatal crashes resulting in 20 fatalities. Of those 20 fatalities, 10 (50%) were killed by impaired drivers (alcohol and/or drugs). Alcohol and/or drug use can affect motor control by distorting one’s judgment of motion, form, and distance. It can also affect reflexes and slow reaction time. Plan ahead and designate a sober driver before traveling to a destination where alcohol will be consumed. The Louisiana State Police as well as other area law enforcement agencies have additional DWI checkpoints planned throughout the year. Drive sober or get pulled over. To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency. Support for this DWI checkpoint was provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. Contact Information Sgt.
