Texas residents die in crash on I-10 in Jefferson Davis Parish

On April 8, 2012, at 5:24 PM, troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 10 near U.S. Highway 165 in Jefferson Davis Parish that claimed the lives of two Port Arthur residents.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban driven by 22-year-old Jeremy Marquis Williams of Port Arthur, TX was traveling west on I-10 in the left lane when one of the rear tires failed, causing Williams to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle then entered the median and rolled over, ejecting 3 occupants who were not properly restrained.

Two of the occupants, 65-year-old Gwendolyn Jernigan and 22-year-old Toya Dynae Williams, died as a result of their injuries. Both are from Port Arthur, TX. An 11-month-old child who was also ejected was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.

Jeremy Williams, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained only minor injuries. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from the driver and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

The majority of fatal and serious injury crashes involve occupants who are not wearing seat belts. Troopers would like to remind motorists of the importance of being properly restrained at all times in every seating position in the vehicle. The simple task of buckling up saves lives.

During a violent crash, occupants in vehicles are safest when properly restrained. The safest place during a vehicle crash is typically inside the vehicle. Seatbelts help prevent vehicle occupants from being ejected. Buckle up Louisiana. Every trip. Every time.

Troop D has investigated 10 fatal crashes in 2012, resulting in 12 fatalities.
