Troopers Arrest Kinder Town Official

Kinder, LA--The police chief of Kinder, 52-year-old Gary Pelican of Kinder, was arrested this morning for theft and malfeasance in office after Louisiana State Police detectives determined that he was using town credit cards to fuel vehicles belonging to family members.

Allen Parish District Attorney Todd Nesom requested the Louisiana State Police to investigate the case after an audit indicated that Pelican was using town credit cards to purchase an excessive amount of fuel. Detectives assigned to the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations reviewed credit card records, surveillance video and conducted interviews.

The investigation revealed Pelican charged approximately $7,700 worth of fuel during the 2012-13 fiscal year using town credit cards. While some of this fuel was for official use, much of it was placed into vehicles belonging to family members.

Pelican was charged with theft over $1500 and malfeasance in office. If convicted, Pelican faces up to 15 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $8,000.
