Winter Driving Conditions Factor in Fatal Calcasieu Parish Crash

On January 24, 2014, at 1:54 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 Eastbound near milepost 26.5 (PPG Drive Overpass) in Calcasieu Parish that claimed the life of one man and injured 3 other people.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2001 Ford F-150 was traveling east on I-10 when the driver lost control on an overpass and the vehicle began to rotate on an icy surface. The vehicle came to rest on the overpass. The driver and a passenger exited the vehicle. While standing outside of the vehicle, the driver was struck by an eastbound 18-wheeler which also struck the F-150 which struck the passenger who exited the pickup. The F-150 traveled through a guardrail onto the ground below the overpass.

The driver sustained fatal injuries. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin. The passenger who exited the vehicle as well as two passengers who remained in the vehicle were transported to area hospitals with moderate injuries. A driver and passenger in the 18-wheeler were not injured.

Routine toxicology samples were obtained from each of the drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

The Louisiana State Police offers the following winter weather driving tips:
    Reduce speed
Allow extra time to reach your destination
    Allow extra space between vehicles
Do not drive using the cruise control in icy conditions
Anticipate stops (such as stop signs and traffic signals) and brake gently while stopping
If you encounter a skid, take your foot off accelerator and steer into the skid till you regain control
Use low beam headlights if it is raining or sleeting
Ensure all vehicle occupants are properly restrained

This is the first fatal crash investigated by Troop D this year.
