TROOP D NEWS RELEASE

December 8, 2013
Calcasieu Parish Fatal Crash

On December 7, 2013, at 9:54 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 171 at North Perkins Ferry Road in Calcasieu Parish that claimed the life of a Reeves woman.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero driven by 76-year-old Georgia Rion of Reeves was stopped facing east at a stop sign on North Perkins Ferry Road. Rion then drove into the path of a 2004 Ford Mustang driven by 27-year-old Abram Hare of DeRidder that was traveling south on U.S. 171. The Oldsmobile was struck on the driver’s side by the Mustang.

Although she was wearing a seatbelt, Rion was pronounced dead at a local hospital due to injuries caused by impact into the driver’s side of the vehicle she was driving. Occupants of the Mustang were all wearing seatbelts and were not injured.

Routine toxicology samples were obtained from each of the drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Stops signs require drivers to carefully ensure they are yielding the right-of-way to other vehicles. Inattentive and distracted driving continues to be a leading cause of crashes in our state. More information on distracted driving may be found online at www.distraction.gov.

Troop D has investigated 22 fatal crashes resulting in 24 fatalities this year.
