TROOP D NEWS RELEASE September 29, 2014 Thirteen Year Old Driver Hits Cow and Kills Passenger DeRidder - A DeRidder man is dead after the vehicle he was a passenger in struck a cow in Beauregard Parish last night. On Sunday, September 29, 2014, at 9:21 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a one-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 112 about 10 miles east of DeRidder. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 13-year-old unlicensed driver was driving a 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck west on LA 112 and struck a cow standing in the roadway. After striking the cow, the driver lost control of the vehicle, traveled off the roadway, and struck a tree. A passenger in the vehicle, 38-year-old Jason Mitchell Brooks of DeRidder, died as a result of the crash. The 13-year-old driver and a 16-year-old passenger were transported from the scene with moderate injuries. No one in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from the driver and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana law prohibits anyone without a driver’s license or driving permit to operate a motor vehicle on a public highway. It is also illegal to knowingly allow an individual to operate a vehicle without a valid driver’s license or driving permit. Doing so can have deadly consequences. Wearing a seat belt on every trip, whether it’s short or long, is the most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash. Motorists are encouraged to always make the smart choice and wear their seatbelt. Troop D has investigated 11 fatal crashes resulting in 11 fatalities this year. | |||
