TROOP D NEWS RELEASE

June 28, 2014
Speeding Impaired Driver Dies in Beauregard Parish Crash

Beauregard Parish – This morning at 6:26 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 12 about 2 ½ miles west of DeQuincy that claimed the life of a DeQuincy man.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by 22-year-old Jacob Louis Dietz of DeQuincy was traveling east on LA 12 at a high rate of speed when Dietz attempted to pass another vehicle. As Dietz began to pass the other vehicle, his vehicle struck the rear of the other vehicle causing him to lose control. The Cobalt Dietz was driving traveled off the roadway and struck a tree causing severe damage to the car. The other vehicle sustained minor damage.

Due to the severity of the crash, Dietz was pronounced dead at the scene despite the fact that he was wearing a seat belt. The driver of the other vehicle, who was also wearing a seat belt, was not injured.

Impairment on the part of Dietz is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers. The crash remains under investigation.

Last year, 63 percent of fatal crashes investigated by Troop D involved an impaired driver. Impaired driving continues to be a significant problem on Louisiana roadways. To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency.

Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway. Speeding also extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle and can lead to a more serious collision in cases where the vehicle strikes another object. Troopers encourage motorists to observe the speed limit and to drive in a safe and prudent manner.
