Missing Opelousas Man Discovered in Fatal Jefferson Davis Parish Crash

A missing Opelousas man who was reportedly last seen on May 2, 2014, was found dead today in a crashed vehicle in Jefferson Davis Parish.

On May 6, 2014, shortly after 1:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash in the south tree line along Interstate Highway 10 Eastbound just east of the U.S. Highway 165 overpass. The preliminary investigation revealed a 1999 Dodge Durango was traveling east on I-10 when the driver, 63-year-old Carroll Gobert of Opelousas, drove off the right side of the highway for unknown reasons. The vehicle struck several small trees before being stopped by a larger tree. The dark blue vehicle was hidden by trees and the crash likely occurred on a previous day.

Gobert did have a seatbelt on but it may not have been worn properly. Gobert appears to have been leaning over onto the passenger side at the time of the crash. Gobert was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson Davis Parish Coroner’s Office.

A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Gobert and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

While the cause of this crash remains under investigation, inattentive and distracted driving continue to be leading causes of crashes in our state. More information on distracted driving may be found online at www.distraction.gov.

Troop D has investigated 5 fatal crashes resulting in 5 fatalities this year.
