TROOP D NEWS RELEASE

September 1, 2013
Jefferson Davis Parish Fatal Crash

On September 1, 2013, at 6:30 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 190 at Louisiana Highway 99 in Jefferson Davis Parish that claimed the life of a Lake Arthur woman.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2005 Buick driven by 68-year-old Alice Landry of Lake Arthur was traveling north on LA 99 when Landry failed to stop at a stop sign at U.S. 190. The vehicle Landry was driving was struck on the driver’s side by an eastbound 2001 Mercury driven by 20-year-old Sierra Leonard of Elton. The crash severely damaged both vehicles.

Although she was wearing a seatbelt, Landry was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries caused by the severe impact into the driver’s side of the car she was driving.

Leonard and an 11-month-old infant accompanying her were transported to a Lake Charles hospital with moderate injuries. Leonard was not wearing a seatbelt and investigators suspect the child seat was not properly installed.

Routine toxicology samples were obtained from each of the drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Inattentive and distracted driving continues to be a leading cause of crashes in our state. More information on distracted driving may be found online at www.distraction.gov.

Is your child using the right car seat? Is it properly installed? Parents and caregivers who want more information on the proper installation of child safety seats are encouraged to have the seat checked by a nationally certified child passenger safety technician. Each Louisiana State Police troop location serves as a fitting station.

In addition, each troop will participate in National Seat Check Saturday on Saturday, September 21, 2013. This is a great opportunity to have your seat checked by a qualified technician for free. More information on child seat safety may be found online at www.nhtsa.gov/Safety/CPS.

Troop D has investigated 17 fatal crashes resulting in 19 fatalities so far this year.
