TROOP A NEWS RELEASE
October 22, 2016
Denham Springs Woman Arrested after Livingston Parish Fatal Crash

Watson Shortly before 5:30 am on October 22, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatality crash that occurred on LA Hwy 16 north of LA Hwy 1019 in Livingston Parish. The crash took the life of 43 year old Brian K. Broom of Watson, LA, and resulted in the arrest of 36 year old Ashley E. Covington of Denham Springs, LA.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Covington was driving a 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck northbound on LA Hwy 16. At the same time, Broom was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu southbound on LA Hwy 16. For reasons still under investigation, Covington was traveling north in the southbound lane of travel. As a result, her pickup truck struck Broom’s Malibu head-on.

Broom was unrestrained at the time of the crash, and suffered severe injuries as a result. He was transported from the scene by Acadian Ambulance to Ochsner Medical Center in Baton Rouge, where he later succumbed to those injuries. Impairment is not suspected on the part of Broom.

Covington was properly restrained, and suffered minor injuries in the crash. Troopers suspect that Covington was impaired on narcotics at the time of the crash. She was arrested and booked into the Livingston Parish jail for Vehicular homicide, Improper lane usage, and Expired driver’s license.

Troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving at all times. Never drive a motor vehicle when impaired or fatigued, and always remain buckled up regardless of seating position. Avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road. Always obey all traffic control devices and be aware of your surroundings at all times.
