TROOP D NEWS RELEASE

August 23, 2013
Unrestrained Passenger Dies in Allen Parish Crash

On August 22, 2013, shortly after 11:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a vehicle crash on Lauderdale Woodyard Road north of U.S. Highway 190 in Allen Parish that claimed the life of a Kinder man.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2003 Chevrolet pick-up driven by 18-year-old Joshua James McGrit of Oberlin was traveling south on Lauderdale Woodyard Road when the vehicle he was driving ran off the road and struck a utility pole on the passenger side. The vehicle then continued through a yard before striking a vehicle parked outside a residence.

The sole passenger in the vehicle, 25-year-old Christopher Anny of Kinder, was pronounced dead at the scene. McGrit was transported to a Lake Charles hospital with moderate injuries. Neither was wearing a seatbelt.

Impairment on the part of McGrit is suspected to be a factor in the crash. McGrit was released from the hospital this morning and was booked into the Allen Parish Jail for vehicular homicide, DWI, careless operation, and failure to wear a seatbelt. The investigation is continuing.

The majority of people who have died in crashes investigated by Louisiana State Police Troop D so far this year were not wearing a seatbelt. Louisiana law requires motor vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in every seating position, day and night. Wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the likelihood of being seriously injured or killed as the result of a crash and is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves. Buckle up Louisiana. Every trip. Every time.

Troop D has investigated 15 fatal crashes resulting in 17 fatalities so far this year.
