TROOP D NEWS RELEASE June 25, 2013 Moss Bluff Man Arrested after Fighting with Troopers Lake Charles- On June 25, 2013, shortly before 5:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D received a call from a concerned citizen about a pedestrian jumping in and out of traffic on U.S. Highway 171 near Louisiana Highway 3059 just north of Lake Charles in Calcasieu Parish. Two nearby Troopers responded and encountered the pedestrian, 21-year-old Michael Paul Gaudin, II of Moss Bluff, near the middle of the highway. In an effort to create a safe situation for Gaudin as well as motorists in the area, Troopers agreed to give Gaudin a ride in order to get him off the highway. During a safety check of Gaudin for weapons, a suspicious object was discovered in his pocket that prompted Troopers to detain Gaudin for further investigation. The object was thought to be drug related. At that time, Gaudin became combative striking one of the Troopers in the face and fighting vigorously. Troopers deployed a department issued Taser which caused Gaudin to cease his aggression. After his release from a local hospital for minor injuries, Gaudin was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center for obstructing a public passage, resisting an officer, felony battery on a police officer, misdemeanor battery on a police officer, simple criminal damage to property, disturbing the peace by public intoxication, and pedestrian walking improperly upon a highway. If convicted of all charges, Gaudin faces up to 7 years, 270 days in prison plus 24 hours of community service and a fine of up to $4,100. One of the Troopers suffered torn ligaments in his leg and a possible dislocated ankle. The other Trooper was not injured. Motorists who encounter pedestrians upon the highway who pose a danger to themselves or others by acting erratically (which may result in a crash) are encouraged to notify State Police by dialing *LSP (*577) or to contact their local law enforcement agency. | |||
