TROOP D NEWS RELEASE

June 3, 2013
Welsh Man Dies after Being Ejected From Pickup Truck

On June 2, 2013, shortly before 9:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to single vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 1131 about 1 ½ miles south of U.S. Highway 90 in Jefferson Davis Parish that claimed the life of a man from Welsh, Louisiana.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2008 Ford truck driven by 45-year-old Daniel E. Hicks, Jr. of Welsh was traveling north on LA 1131 when the vehicle he was driving failed to negotiate a curve to the right and exited the roadway. The vehicle then struck a utility pole and overturned several times.

Hicks, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

Impairment on the part of Hicks is suspected to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

The majority of vehicle occupants who die in crashes in our state are not wearing a seatbelt including 9 of the 10 people who have died in crashes investigated by Troop D so far this year. Wearing a seatbelt is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash. For SUV, pickup, and van occupants, seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury by 60 percent. Motorists should always make the smart choice and wear their seatbelt.

This is the 10th fatal crash investigated by Louisiana State Police Troop D this year.
