Unrestrained Teenager Dies in Calcasieu Parish Crash

Lake Charles- On May 16, 2013, shortly before 7:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two vehicle crash at the intersection of Ward Line Road and Louisiana Highway 397 in southern Calcasieu Parish that claimed the life of a woman from Elton and critically injured twin sisters also from Elton.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2013 Nissan Altima driven by 18-year-old Kennedy Renee Isaac of Elton was traveling north on Ward Line Road and failed to stop at a stop sign. A 2004 Jeep driven by 49-year-old Oralia Benoit of Lake Charles was traveling east on LA 397 and had the right-of-way when the Jeep she was driving struck the Nissan driven by Isaac.

A passenger in Isaac’s vehicle, 18-year-old Shelby Christine Granger of Elton, died as a result of the crash. Isaac and another passenger in the vehicle, 18-year-old Kelsey Regen Isaac of Elton, were critically injured as a result of the crash. No one in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt.

Benoit, who was wearing a seatbelt, received moderate injuries.

Impairment on the part of Kennedy Isaac is suspected to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was obtained from both drivers and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.

Seven of the eight people who have died in crashes investigated by Louisiana State Police Troop D so far this year were not wearing a seatbelt. Louisiana law requires motor vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in every seating position, day and night. Wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the likelihood of being seriously injured or killed as the result of a crash and is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves. Buckle up Louisiana. Every trip. Every time.

This is the eighth fatal crash investigated by Louisiana State Police Troop D this year.
