News Release - July 1, 2010
State Police Troop D to Participate in “No Refusal Weekend”

LAKE CHARLES - In Louisiana, almost half of all fatality crashes involve impaired drivers. To combat the problem of impaired driving in our area, Louisiana State Police Troop D troopers will participate in a “No Refusal Weekend” over the Fourth of July holiday period. District attorneys in Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, and Jefferson Davis Parishes have instituted this program in an effort to make our roadways safer.

If a trooper stops a motorist who is obviously impaired, and the motorist refuses to submit to a test for intoxication, this information will be submitted to a judge and reviewed. If he or she determines probable cause exists, a search warrant will be signed by the judge and provided to the trooper. The motorist will then get another opportunity to voluntarily submit a sample. If the motorist still refuses, he or she will be transported to a predetermined location and a body fluid sample will be taken by a qualified medical professional.

Additional troopers will be on patrol looking for impaired drivers this weekend. Troopers also plan to target remote areas and will be looking not only for those driving under the influence of alcohol, but also narcotics.

There are no excuses for impaired driving and those who choose to endanger themselves and others will be arrested. Before attending any celebration, plan a safe way home. Designate a sober driver and give that person your keys. If you are impaired, call a taxi, sober friend, or family member. If you see a suspected impaired driver, contact your local police or sheriff’s department, or call the Louisiana State Police from your cell phone by dialing *LSP (*577).
