News Release – Troop D January 8, 2012 Unrestrained driver seriously injured in Calcasieu Parish crash Sulphur, LA–On Sunday, January 8, 2012, at approximately 8:34 a.m., troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to single-vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 10 about 3 miles west of Sulphur that seriously injured a Sulphur man. Investigating troopers report that a 2007 Ford driven by 20-year-old Travis Jase Johnson of Sulphur was traveling west on I-10 when the vehicle he was driving crossed the left fog line. Johnson then overcorrected to the right causing his vehicle to rotate across the westbound lanes before striking a tree north of the highway, going airborne, and then striking a second tree. Johnson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the driver’s seat and traveled about 75 feet through the air before landing. Johnson received serious injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition. Alcohol or drug use has not been determined at this time. A toxicology sample was obtained from Johnson and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending. Louisiana state law requires all vehicle occupants to wear a seat belt. Wearing a seat belt is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in a crash. Buckle up Louisiana.
