Edmonson, Superintendent News Release – Troop D May 4, 2010 Operation Lifesaver Enforcement Detail in Calcasieu Parish LAKE CHARLES – Today, Louisiana State Police Troop D and the Union Pacific Railroad Police conducted an enforcement detail focusing on railroad crossings east of Lake Charles. Troopers and officers were looking for motorists who ignored railroad crossing warning signals as a train approached. During today’s detail, a total of 35 citations were issued including 29 for failure to obey a signal indicating the approach of a train, 3 for failing to wear a seat belt, 2 for driving under suspension, and 1 for no proof of insurance. Last year, 11 people in Louisiana lost their lives in vehicle crashes with trains. This was the sixth highest number of such fatalities in the nation. Louisiana state law requires motorists to obey signals at railroad crossings that indicate an approaching train including flashing red lights and lowered gates. Failure to obey these signals may result in a $200.00 fine and 30 days in jail for a first offense with higher fines and increased jail time for additional violations.
