| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent News Release – Troop D May 23, 2010 Troop D to Participate in Click It or Ticket Campaign LAKE CHARLES - Louisiana State Police Troop D will join with other law enforcement agencies and participate in high-visibility seat belt enforcement in conjunction with the nationwide Click It or Ticket campaign. The campaign will run May 24 - June 6, 2010. Special emphasis on seat belt enforcement will take place throughout the campaign. Furthermore, a grant will provide funding for additional troopers to actively look for seat belt violations. Troop D commander Captain Michael Leonards says, “I urge motorists to buckle up and to encourage their loved ones to do the same.” Louisiana law requires everyone in a vehicle to be properly restrained. Seat belts are the most effective safety feature available in vehicles today; still nearly one in five Americans fail to regularly wear a seat belt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle. In 2008 alone, seat belts saved 13,250 lives nationwide. The high-visibility enforcement of the Click It or Ticket campaign is credited with increasing the national belt usage rate from 58 percent in 1994 to an observed usage rate of 84 percent in 2009. The usage rate in Louisiana is currently 75 percent. Contact Information: Sgt.
