Interstate Closure in Calcasieu Parish

SULPHUR – This morning, at 11:12 a.m., troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to an overturned oversize load on the westbound ramp connecting Interstate 210 to Interstate10 west near Sulphur in Calcasieu Parish.

The crash occurred when a 2002 International truck driven by 54-year-old George M. Higgins of Verbena, Alabama, overturned in a curve while transporting a 130 foot long beam weighing 114,000 pounds. Higgins, who was wearing his seatbelt, was not injured in the crash. Troopers were forced to close the ramp and divert westbound Interstate I-210 traffic near the crash until 3:30 p.m. this afternoon.

The beam was successfully removed from the highway and will remain on the side of the road until tomorrow morning. A special clamp is required to retrieve the beam and is currently being brought in from out-of-state. Tire failure is suspected to be a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.

At approximately 09:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, troopers will once again close the westbound Interstate 210 ramp that connects to Interstate 10 near Sulphur so that crews may recover the beam. This is expected to take at least 4 hours, possibly longer. Motorists in this area can expect delays and are urged to use an alternate route.
