Halloween Safety Tips

Lake Charles- Louisiana State Police Troop D wants to remind all drivers the importance of safety this weekend as children are out trick-or-treating. Drivers traveling on Louisiana roadways should remember that some communities will be holding Halloween activates all weekend. If you are in an area where children are present, please remember to make the safe decision and reduce your speed if it is necessary.

Troopers will be looking for motorists who are under the influence of alcohol or narcotics throughout the weekend. If you are planning on drinking make sure you designate a driver, or you could be spending your Halloween in a place much scarier then a haunted house.

For the parents who will be accompanying their children this weekend during trick-or-treating State Police offers these safety tips:

Visibility is very important with regard to being seen by motorists.
Avoid dark clothing, wear reflective clothing, and use lights and/or glow sticks.
Sidewalks are always the best option for Trick-or-Treaters when available.
Pedestrians should walk facing traffic and only cross at marked cross walks or at intersections.
Motorist need to drive with extreme caution around Trick-or-Treaters.
Citizens are asked to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately.

If you want to know about potential sex offenders in your area, you can visit http://www.lsp.org/socpr/default.html. Under current State Law, it is illegal for a registered sex offender to participate in Halloween Trick-or-Treat activities. If you become aware of a sex offender who is attending costume parties where children are present or giving out candy, notify your local law enforcement immediately.
