Single Vehicle Crash Near Welsh Kills Sulphur Man

WELSH, LA – This morning, shortly before 11:00 am., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single vehicle crash on Interstate 10 westbound near mile post 52, west of Welsh, in Jefferson Davis Parish.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2004 Ford pickup driven by 61-year-old Elwood Prater, Jr. of Sulphur was traveling west on Interstate 10 when the truck he was driving started to run off of the highway. Prater overcorrected, this time losing control of the vehicle. Prater ran off the roadway again and flipped the vehicle multiple times. The vehicle came to rest on its side between the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 and the north service road.

Prater, who was the only occupant, was wearing a seatbelt but suffered fatal injuries as a result of the vehicle continuing to flip over. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Excessive speed is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Standard toxicology and blood alcohol tests are pending and the crash remains under investigation.

Troop D troopers have investigated 19 fatal crashes for the year of 2010, resulting in 22 fatalities.
