Edmonson, Superintendent News Release – Troop D September 29, 2010 Fatal Crash Involving School Crossing Guards in Moss Bluff MOSS BLUFF – This morning, just before 7:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a crash involving two pedestrians on LA 378 west of Parish Road in Calcasieu Parish. The two pedestrians involved were on-duty Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office school crossing guards. They were setting up traffic control cones in the roadway just before dawn in front of Moss Bluff Elementary School. A 2003 Kia Optima driven by 91-year-old Wallace G. Berwick of Iowa was traveling west on LA 378 when he struck the two deputies. Both pedestrians sustained serious injuries and were transported to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. One of the deputies, 70-year-old Roland E. Parker of Lake Charles was pronounced dead at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. The other, 73-year-old Karl D. Edwards of Lake Charles, remains in the hospital in serious condition. No other injuries occurred as a result of the crash. Berwick was charged with careless operation (LRS 32:58) as well as drivers to exercise due care (LRS 32:214). Additionally, troopers will submit a report of driver condition or behavior to the Office of Motor Vehicles for review. Routine toxicology samples were obtained from Berwick. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor and the crash remains under investigation. Contact Information: Sgt.
