| TROOP A NEWS RELEASE October 24, 2016 Dump Truck Driver Arrested after Early Morning Fatal Crash in East Baton Rouge Parish Zachary, LA – Shortly after 6:00 am on October 24, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a three vehicle fatality crash that occurred at the intersection of US 61 and Flanacher Rd. in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash resulted in the death of 29 year old Gilbert Rivera of Baton Rouge, LA and the arrest of 26 year old Deante Dixon of St. Francisville, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Dixon was traveling eastbound on Flanacher Rd. in a 1993 Mack dump truck. Dixon began to cross the northbound lanes of US 61 and came to a stop in the median opening with the rear of his dump truck in the left lane of US 61 northbound. At the same time, Rivera was traveling northbound in the left lane of US 61 in a 2006 BMW X5. Rivera’s vehicle struck the rear wheels and the dump bed of Dixon’s vehicle. The impact caused Rivera’s vehicle to rotate counter clockwise into the right lane of US 61 northbound and struck a 1997 Ford F-150 driven by 59 year old Gary Sumrall of Baker, LA. Rivera was properly restrained but sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office. Dixon was properly restrained and sustained minor injuries in the crash. Sumrall was also properly restrained and was not injured in the crash. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash but a toxicology sample will be taken from all drivers for analysis. Dixon was placed under arrest for Negligent Homicide and Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign. Dixon will be booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail upon his release from the hospital.
