State Police Prepared For Hurricane Ike

Lake Charles- With Hurricane IKE potentially approaching the Southwest Louisiana coast and the Southeast Texas coast by Friday evening, the Louisiana State Police is prepared for the influx of traffic traveling east on Interstate 10 through Louisiana. State Police, in conjunction with local, parish and Texas officials, are continuously monitoring the traffic in both states and making adjustments as necessary to maintain continuous traffic flow on all major highways. State Police units are on the ground and in the air along all major highways to monitor traffic conditions.

The Louisiana State Police, LA DOTD, local sheriff’s offices and local police are currently working to assist in preparations for contraflow efforts, if implemented. State Police has already worked with DOTD to preposition cones and traffic signs along the roadways in order to prepare for the possible activation of contraflow operations. Colonel Michael Edmonson, State Police Superintendent, along with other state officials, will be in Calcasieu and Cameron parishes today to make sure local and parish officials have the necessary resources available for evacuation efforts.

State Police Troop D personnel continue to work double shifts and all Rapid Response Teams are on standby. Troop E will be sending troopers to supplement Troop D personnel.

When traveling on state highways keep all lanes clear by moving crashes or stalled vehicles off the roadway to continue uninterrupted traffic flow. The public is encouraged to call the Louisiana State Police Hotline at 1-800-469-4828 for traffic or evacuation information. In the South West Louisiana area, the public can contact the State Police Troop D by cell phone by dialing *LSP (*577) to report any roadway emergency.

Evacuation Update

The Louisiana State Police is assisting local and parish officials in Cameron and Calcausieu parishes with mandatory evacuation to ensure all residents are able to leave the area with minimal traffic delays.

Cameron Parish: Cameron parish officials have ordered a mandatory evacuation for all parish residents.

Calcasieu Parish: Calcasieu parish officials have ordered a mandatory evacuation for all residents in low lying areas, residents who live in a trailer or mobile home, and special needs residents. Residents needing assistance with evacuation should call 337-721-4020.

Calcasieu parish has also implemented a curfew beginning Friday, September 12, 2008 from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM. State Police and local law enforcement agencies will be out enforcing the curfew.
